We held our first-ever Awards Gala and celebrated 40 years of being the voice of Canada's independent music industry at Toronto's The Great Hall on June 15! With close to 200 people in attendance, CIMA is excited to have kicked off its 40th year in style. Hosted by CBC's Grant Lawrence, our Awards Gala showcased the strength, diversity and breadth of Canada's independent music sector by honouring the companies and personalities that have been instrumental to building its past, present and future. If you were in attendance, thank you for coming and thank you for celebrating this important milestone with us!

Please join us in congratulating our Award winners, listed below. You can find more information about award categories by clicking here.

The Founders Award went to Bernie Finkelstein, Stan Klees, Terry Brown, Frank Davies, Tommy Graham, Greg Hambleton, Jack Richardson, Allan Macmillan, Ben McPeek, Art Snider and Paul Clinch.

The Brian Chater Leadership Award was presented to Pegi Cecconi, SRO-Anthem, while the Entrepreneur Award was presented to Jeffrey Remedios, Arts & Crafts Productions.

Finally, the Unsung Hero Award was presented to Jack Long of Long and McQuade Musical Instruments.

In a departure from the typical Awards gala formula, attendees were able to learn from some of the best in a panel-style discussion with the founders in attendance, moderated by Denise Donlon. Check out a recap of some of the themes from this discussion courtesy of FYI Music News

Attendees also were treated to performances from Colin MacDonald, Ian Thornley, Jason Collett, Hawksley Workman and Tomi Swick, while the Canadian Blast afterparty featured sets from Ain't No Love, CAIRO, Grand Analog, and The OBGMs.

We would be remiss if we didn't also thank the sponsors who made this event possible: the Ontario Media Development Corporation (OMDC), the Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings (FACTOR), MuchFACT, Slaight Music, Stingray Music, Molson Canadian, Constellation Brands, Recording Artists’ Collecting Society (ACTRA RACS), the Canadian Federation of Musicians (CFM), the Canadian Musical Reproduction Rights Agency Ltd. (CMRRA), Musicians’ Rights Organization Canada (MROC), Re:Sound, Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN), and the Government of Canada.
